Hey 09s19 and etc. people=)
Nicholas / I/c of the Blog here.
First things first, my purpose for blogging today would be to increase your knowledge on sign language as everyone initially gave e extremely puzzled look when we decided on doing Sign Language for LF.
ok,
1. What is Sign language??
Sign languages are principally used among members of what linguists call the “culturally deaf” communities. They rely on hand signs, facial expressions, body positions, motions and other physical signs (Lip-reading) in order to communicate. By comparison, spoken language relies mostly on sounds on words.
Background info on Sign Language:
The written history of sign language began in the 17th century in Spain. In 1620, Juan Pablo Bonet published Reducción de las letras y arte para enseñar a hablar a los mudos (‘Reduction of letters and art for teaching mute people to speak’) in Madrid. It is considered the first modern treatise of Phonetics and Logopedia, setting out a method of oral education for the deaf people by means of the use of manual signs, in form of a manual alphabet to improve the communication of the dumb or deaf people.
2. Why are we studying Sign language?
Apart from e initial interest from 09s19 to study sign language...
In general, it helps us understand the very nature of human language.
Basically,
The aim of our project is to learn how to communicate in basic sign language and to conduct a workshop on basic sign language after mastering this skill. The purpose of this course is to let people learn a new skill which they can use in the future, perhaps in emergency situations where they must communicate with people whom with they do not share a common language.
The ability to communicate using sign language is a valuable skill which can help people greatly, should they wish to communicate with the hearing-impaired or mute. Being able to carry out a basic conversation with them can be extremely useful should there be situations such as where we encounter a deaf or mute individual in need of help, or should
or should one decide to work or do community service within the deaf or mute community. =)
Since we dont really have the time to meet up, not so especially after school due to individual commitments, as mentioned by Melissa, the learning materials have been to sent to you via mail =)
We will meet up when there's time.
Additional Stuff ---------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a extremely beneficial video for sign language. There are also many other videos on sign language done up by this lady. Do take a look =)
Btw to etc blog readers,
This is a rough outline on what we will be doing.

Hope to see you at our LF =)
